Renova and CLP sign strategic cooperation agreement to advance Hong Kong's green energy transition

The two sides will deepen cooperation in large-scale storage projects, regional grid optimization and renewable-energy absorption to jointly advance Hong Kong's carbon-neutral goal. This strategic cooperation marks another important milestone for Renova in the energy-transition field.

As a major international financial center in Asia, Hong Kong is accelerating towardcarbon neutrality before 2050a grand goal. In this process, scaled clean-energy adoption and improved grid flexibility become key issues. Renova and CLP (China Light & Power) today formally signed a strategic cooperation agreement, and the two will jointly advance a series of green-energy projects in Hong Kong and the regional market.

Under the agreement, Renova will leverage itsenergy-storage system integrationand swap-network operation know-how to complement CLP's deep grid-side resources, jointly exploring an innovative 'source-grid-load-storage' integrated business model.

Background: From Pilot to Scale

Over the past two years, Renova has deployed clean-energy demonstration projects across multiple Hong Kong scenarios — mall rooftop PV, data-center backup storage, port swap stations and more. Their successful operation validated the reliability and safety of the company's storage systems in hot, humid climates and laid the trust foundation for this strategic cooperation with CLP.

Why Now?

As Hong Kong's electricity peak keeps growing and renewable share raises grid fluctuation, storage is shifting from 'optional equipment' to 'essential infrastructure'. CLP needs flexible regulating resources to balance load, and Renova happens to have rapidly deployable modular storage capability.

The cooperation will start first fromindustrial/commercial user-side storageand then gradually expand to grid-side and regional-level projects.

Three Key Areas of Cooperation

The agreement defines the core cooperation directions for the next three years, focusing on the following three areas:

  • 01 Large-scale Storage Project Development Joint investment and construction of 100MW-class storage stations serving Hong Kong's main grid for frequency regulation, peak shaving and emergency backup.
  • 02 Regional Grid Optimization Deploy distributed storage in load-dense areas to improve local grid resilience and ease transmission/distribution pressure at peak times.
  • 03 Renewable Integration & Swap Synergy Channeling intermittent clean power such as PV and wind into the swap network and storage pools to raise renewable utilization.

Advancing Hong Kong's Carbon Neutrality Roadmap

Per the Hong Kong government's latest carbon-neutrality roadmap, storage is a key technology supporting large-scale renewable integration. This cooperation directly echoes policy direction and is expected to cut participating commercial clients' electricity cost by about 25%in the first cooperation year, while significantly improving regional grid stability.

Technical Support: Liquid-Cooled Storage System

Renova will deploy its new-generationliquid-cooled storage system, using advanced thermal management to keep long battery life and high safety even in Hong Kong's hot, humid climate, with millisecond-level response for frequency regulation, backup and energy shifting.

Phase-1 planned storage capacity
25%
Reduction in electricity cost for commercial clients
2050
Hong Kong carbon neutrality target year
3 years
First-phase cooperation period

Renova stated it will continue to position itself as a 'global sustainable clean-energy system solution provider', joining more partners including CLP to accelerate the energy transition of Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. The company also plans to open demo-base visit booking within the year, letting the public intuitively understand how storage and swap technologies fit into city life.
